The Manhattan Garment Works
For more than a century, the Garment District has been one of New York City’s great engines of creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship.
Within these streets, makers, tailors, patternmakers, textile suppliers, costume shops, and family-run businesses helped shape Broadway, film, fashion, and American culture itself. The ReThread Project believes this legacy deserves more than remembrance. It deserves a future.

The Future of New York’s Garment District
Honoring the Legacy. Building the Workforce. Redefining the Industry.

The Garment Heritage Center
The Manhattan Garment Works will house a dedicated museum preserving the rich history of New York's garment industry, from the workers and workshops to the craft traditions that shaped American fashion. Through permanent and rotating exhibitions, the museum will tell the story of the district that dressed the world.

Small Business Maker Space & Rental Studios
Designed for independent designers, tailors, and small-batch producers, the maker space and rental studios at The Manhattan Garment Works will provide affordable, fully equipped production facilities in the Garment District. The goal is simple: keep working garment professionals in the neighborhood by giving them the space and tools they need at rates they can sustain.

Garment Innovation Labs
The innovation labs at The Manhattan Garment Works will bring together designers, engineers, and manufacturers to explore new approaches to garment production. From sustainable textiles to advanced fabrication technologies, the labs will serve as a working research space where the future of fashion is developed right in the district that defined it.

Educational Programming & Training Spaces
Education and training are central to the mission of The Manhattan Garment Works. Dedicated floors will house hands-on programming in garment construction, design, and preservation, offering apprenticeships, scholarships, and professional development for anyone looking to build a career in the garment and fashion trades.

Event & Community Space
Atop The Manhattan Garment Works, a rooftop event and community space will host fashion showcases, industry panels, fundraisers, and public programming. The space will serve as a gathering point for the garment and fashion communities, bringing the industry together in the heart of the district where it all started.

“As a person, as a woman, as an actress, I know that the clothes we wear—on the street or the runway, on a stage or on a film set—tell stories about who we are and where we come from and where we dream of going. That’s why I support The ReThread Project and its New York City Garment District initiatives, which will help the district to stay alive and thriving”
