A Multi-Initiative Approach

The ReThread Project works across multiple connected initiatives, each one built to preserve the heritage of the Garment District and the makers who shaped it while moving the industry and the neighborhood forward. Together our initiatives form one approach: protect the space where the craft is made, pass the skills to a new generation, and preserve the garments that hold more than a century of design history. Each initiative stands on its own, and each one strengthens the others.
Every one of these initiatives depends on people who believe this work is important. Donations fund the apprenticeships, preserve the archives, and bring a permanent home for New York's garment community closer to reality. Whatever you are able to give goes directly into the craft and the people who practice it.
Apprenticeship Program
Training the next generation of garment and costume makers.

The ReThread Project Apprenticeship Program is a six-week paid apprenticeship that places emerging costume makers alongside master artisans in working shops and on live productions, valuing passion and command of the craft ahead of formal credentials
Costume Rental House
A century of costume history, preserved and back in use.

The Costume Rental House Initiative is about building a world-class, fully digitized rental collection spanning the 1860s to the present, restoring access that New York's designers, filmmakers, and theater artists have gone without for years.
